Steve Cox
Vocals, Guitar
Steve started musically singing in church choirs and as a bass player. He found it difficult to play bass and sing, so he switched to guitar and started to write more songs. An avid collector of guitars, he amuses his fellow Suspects by bringing a different guitar to almost every rehearsal, just to see how it sounds!
He says he can’t see any reason to play anyone else’s music. ‘That’s no fun at all’. Steve admits to writing most of his lyrics whilst walking his beloved Weimaraner Heidi, and says tunes just come when they come. He has no idea how. He is also the band’s cook.
Nick Rees
Electric Violin
Born in Wales, just over the border to a Welsh father and an English mother, Nick often visited Dorset for many years before he move to Milton Abbas, some ten years ago. He is the original Wild Child of Rock. His outrageous (but never rude) behaviour, has not dulled with age. He is loved by his friends and the band for his kindness, fun loving and sense of humour.
His unique, classically trained rock fiddle playing, gives the band more than just originality.
Nick lives next door to Steve. He heard Steve playing guitar one day in his summerhouse (The Dog House). Nick said ‘I like that. Can I join and see how it sounds’? They played later that day, and within a few minutes, a band was formed.
Terry Dickerson
Drums
When Nick and Steve advertised for a drummer under the banner ‘Do you wanna be a rock’n’roll star?' Terry replied by calling Steve’s number and said ‘I do wanna be a rock ‘n’ roll star. Do you have a drummer yet?' Steve replied: 'we do now'! A native of Shapwick Dorset, where he joined his first band The Crabs (named after a local folklore creature) at 14. Drumming came easy to Terry. His metronomic timing is admired by his fellow local musicians with whom, he regularly plays. He is sometimes called Roland after the drum machine!
Terry is the best arranger in the Same Old Suspects and is simply the heartbeat of the band. He lives in Winterbourne Whitechurch, just a short walk away from where we record at Hangover Hill Studios.
Jon Riddle
Bass Guitar
Jon has lived in Dorset all his life; now firmly settled in Milborne St Andrew, one village away from the other Suspects. Jon has been playing bass for more than 30 years, and says he might be better at it by now if he didn’t have so many other things going on all the time! He transitioned to his beloved 5-string bass at the turn of the century and drops an octave whenever he can get away with it. Jon also brings useful experience arranging songs from his work with other musicians.
Over the years, he has played mostly in covers bands, but the opportunity to play original music with the Suspects was too good to miss when asked by Steve if he was available to join when he was introduced by a mutual friend. Jon just fitted straight in, he says “Good friends and great music; nothing else matters.”
